Y'all, I Love DashCon 2…

*A Long Overdue Retrospective, Two Years In & Out

Oh DashCon~Between the years 2014 to 2024 if you heard this name your brain would immediately jump to a dilapidated convention hall with a sad, almost pathetic looking kiddie pool filled with plastic balls and a sense of dread that permeated your digital screen. But something amazing happened in the summer of 2024, STRANGE ÆONS’ would release DashCon: An Extensive Oral History which covered the ill-fated timeline of the original convention, celebrated the ten year anniversary and contained the announcement that DashCon 2 would be taking place in 2025 in Toronto (technically, North York), Ontario. Now, I know what you might be thinking, “Jai, there is no way you took a gamble on this con actually happening and bought a ticket.” Well dear reader, I did. Mostly because I am Canadian, this convention was only a flight away, and it was awesome enough that somehow I went not once… But twice!

The First DashCon 2 (July 5, 2025)

The best way to describe the process of getting to and experiencing DashCon 2 (2025) is “a saga”. In order to make the documentation process easier I did start a highlight on my private instagram account and a physical travel sketchbook to capture everything from the process of purchasing a wristband (the website crashed as I was doing so), becoming the certified tumblr sexyman™ Sans from Undertale and discovering the quintessential podcast Return to the Ballpit: A DashCon 2 Podcast by O Steeina. The Royal Ball Official Playlist would also be released in the lead up to the convention.

DashCon 2 (2025) will forever receive the highest of praises from me for being one of the most inclusive cons in terms of accessibility and accommodations for attendees, my personal example being, when I was unfortunately plagued by an unexpected period I walked into the bathroom and spotted a conveniently placed box of free menstrual products (HELL YEAH) from the DashCon team! The general atmosphere of DashCon 2 was one of nostalgia and respect, at no point during this con did I ever feel unsafe or unwelcome. I felt the same level of joy of going to DashCon that I did when I was a kid going to conventions in the mid-2000s to early 2010s; a feeling that is hard to capture as many local conventions drift from the “for the community, by the community” model to the business-fronted corporation cons we see popping up. The attendees and artist alley folks I managed to chat with were incredibly genuine and warm towards having conversations about blorbos, the tumblr sexyman poll results for 2025 or of course—The Duel. Like a true tumblr post, you were indeed within arms reach of some of the internets most iconic tumblr users, this closeness did make me step back as I could imagine how overwhelming it must've been for guests to have fans swarm.

My highlights of the convention certainly had to be getting a drawing from DogMedic, the tumblr sexyman meet up, running into Swell Entertainment on the convention floor, contributing to the tumblr sexyman shrine, and meeting some fellow Reigen Arataka fans who I’ve stayed in touch with through Discord (hi Reigengate (And Sans) pals if you are reading this!). My biggest personal regret was not making it to any panels, but for a one-day convention, I think soaking up the atmosphere while floating around is always acceptable. I also did not attend anything related to VirtualDash (the online version of DashCon) since I operated on the “if I can go in person, I should leave a virtual spot available for someone else” way of thinking. Looking back through my sketchbook, specifically at the Pocket Guide that I taped in, I feel the dedication page perfectly captures what the intentions of the event were and the overall spirit that the organizers aimed for and achieved.

While I am not an event reviewer by any means, I have attended enough conventions/events to firmly state that every single one has areas for growth, and while I will forever go to bat for DashCon 2 there were some things that I found had room for improvement1. Universally, one of the biggest issues was the venue itself: The Japanese Canadian Centre. This venue is without a doubt beautiful and home to a lot of important history, but it does not have a floor plan for a convention of this scale and level of IRL internet shenanigans. While attendees were mindful of this, areas labelled "Not for DashCon 2" were quickly overrun by attendees seeking spaces to eat, rest or just explore despite the warning (very DW "That Sign Won't Stop Me, because I Can't Read" coded ). The singular stairwell often became crowded especially after panels ended and attendees were making their way to their next activity or panel. The location of the Crow Exchange (an incredibly clever idea for an attendee activity) ended up causing more of a traffic jam than anticipated since it was in the Heritage Court smack between the exit to the gardens where meet-ups were occurring, the location of the Ball Pit (a staple, in my opinion) and the stairs to the panel rooms. I acknowledge that the DashCon 2 team truly did the best they could with the floor plan they had, but it would be difficult to organize an event like this in the same location.

DashCon 2 also had a case of the midday convention lull. This was in part due to the fact that from 2:00 - 4:00pm the Vendor's Hall closed to give vendors a break, but there was not enough space in the main hall for everyone to watch the drag show, not to mention the small hall gets very loud during any performances. This lull in activity continued into the evening as the day wound down for the closing ceremonies. I want to acknowledge once again though, for a one-day convention having this break was awesome, but it led to a lot of attendees not quite knowing where to go to pass the time.

As DashCon 2 (2025) came to a close, the news articles and videos began to appear online as I scanned my travel sketchbook pages and made a zine for my friend to capture the day’s events since they too were a former tumblr user. I also started a log of interesting DashCon 2 videos which you can find below. Online, we all waited with baited breath for the question on our minds to finally be answered… ʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔ Would there be a DashCon 3?

DashCon 2… 2? (August 1st to 2nd, 2026)

When news of another DashCon broke through my inbox (thank goodness for email newsletters) I knew I was going to do everything in my power to head back. DashCon 2 ended up being my favourite event of the 2025 Convention Season and, the second DashCon 2 was (at the time of the announcement) the only fandom-based con I could fit into my schedule for the 2026 year. There were quite a few changes to the overall format of the event: official meet and greets, more guests, more panels all supported by the biggest change—DashCon 2 was now two days instead of one!

There were some downsides though, the convention was back at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (with some hints that a future non-DashCon event ran by the same team may not be at this venue?). For any folks near the west-coast of Canada DashCon 2’s timing did clash with AniRevo (not for me though, I’ve not been interested in that con) and as a friend pointed out Otakon in the US due to the change in dates. There was also the matter of the name, since it was not DashCon 3, was it DashCon Two-Two (like Jacob Two-Two)? Dashcon Squared? DashCon 2: 2 fast, 2 furious? I was rather fond of DashCon 2: Electric Boogaloo... Long story short though, upon some investigating on the website the DashCon 2 team would take inspiration from the Fast and Furious Franchise naming this iteration of DashCon 2, "DashCon 2: Vive la Révolution!, or DashCon 2: Revolution for short"2

In the lead up to DashCon 2: Revolution I:

Before I knew it I was packing my ever trusty con bag for Day One with a rough idea of what panels I wanted to attend, and of course which artists I wanted to visit in Vendor's Hall thanks to their catalogues.

Day One: The Guillotine Day - Saturday August 1st, 2026

The main event for Saturday as advertised was the public vote for the guillotining of either Sir STRANGE ÆONS or Robespierre (Xiran Jay Zhao) who were both back as special guests! As a fan of guillotines I was excited to see how this would be performed (because obviously they were not going to actually behead someone). Before anyone asks, no, I will not be disclosing who I voted to have guillotined because I lost my voting token within an hour of receiving it (heck my stupid baka life) and could not believe these two icons have been battling it out since the Closing Ceremonies of DashCon 2 (2025)! ʕ☉ᴥ☉ʔ

Upon arriving, I received the Pocket Guide for DashCon 2 (2026) which had quite a bit of schedule changes along with another sweet dedication to those attending.

Art Trade: I made it to the art trade this year and what a way to start a day filled with immaculate vibes! There were plenty of artists who were willing to share supplies, chat a bit, and of course make some art! Since this was a popular activity there were moments where the volunteers did ask participants who arrived earlier in the time slot to rotate out so others could enter the space and make art. Following this request I did end up rotating out but I still had a fabulous time! If any of the artists from Art Trade are reading this, y'all were so cool! ʕ ˃ᴥ˂ ʔ

The tumblr sexyman shrine (or the blorbo shrine?): A space I visited frequently throughout the weekend to see how it grew. I dropped off most of the markers I brought for the Art Trade for other attendees to use, since when I first arrived there were only pencils. Upon arriving early Saturday I noticed that this year the shrine was in memoriam of Toast and felt this was a wonderful way to remember someone who had a huge impact on the community. Outside of my marker donation, I would contribute two sketches to the shrine with some creative support from other shrine contributors. I'll forever have a fondness for the tumblr sexyman shrine as it is a living communal space that perfectly captures the love for characters throughout different fandom communities in both appreciation and collective remembrance. By the time I was leaving on Day Two the shrine had expanded exponentially with so much love and care. I really hope it is documented through a video format as seen in some YouTube Shorts from last year's shrine. Additionally, some attendees mentioned that tumblr sexywomen should crash this shrine and I wholeheartedly agree! ʕ ᵔᴥᵔ ʔ

Crow Exchange: Another space that I would frequent throughout the weekend (as it was upstairs where it was cooler temperature-wise) and filled with the most wholesome chaotic vibes at times then insanely quiet during others. Thank you to everyone who took my collection of 2010s anime keychains off my hands in exchange for a variety of items including but not limited to:

A general note here is that there was also trading that happened outside of this space during both days of the convention, and upon reflection trading is something that organically happens as part of this convention's distinct culture. I received so many stickers and bracelets along with miscellaneous items like: a tiny key, Reigen Arataka's business card, and a discount coupon for consulting from Reigen Arataka.

Meet & Greets: Firstly, such a great idea to have the Meet and Greets near the ball pit since it is a quieter space away from the guillotine and main events area. I made it into exactly one meet and greet this convention and that was because I would either be on my way to a panel or off to a main event. Due to the placement of the Meet & Greet tables, I'd see them happening while making my way to other activities which I thought was a great way to visually remind attendees that there were indeed Meet & Greet opportunities outside of referring to the schedule. I want to give a very big shout out to coleydoesthings, ordinarydream3r and harriyana hook for being some of the most approachable guests and making the Meet and Greet experience so welcoming and smooth! I didn't even realize I was casually talking to Harriyana about My Little Pony until I was walking away and thought "Wait a minute... Was that Harriyana Hook?!", and Coley and Ordinary I will be sure to let my students know I met y'all! ʕᵔᴥᵔʔ ☆

Vendor's Hall (aka. Artist Alley): Yet another space I would frequent throughout the convention, because goodness do I love Artist Alleys! Day One, there were some empty tables but that had no impact on my actual experience as an attendee in this hall. The Vendor's Hall was such a well organized space to take my time and make sure I checked out every single table before doing my purchasing rounds. I also appreciated how on Day One the Charity Raffle table was right by the entrance of the hall and Day Two the charity for this year Rainbow Railroad had a pop up table in that location! Similar to Crow Exchange, this space would frequently fluctuate in terms of attendees wandering the aisles, but at no point did I feel crowded and overwhelmed. I will make a note that Vendor's Hall would close from 2:00 - 4:00pm on Day One to provide the vendors with respite contributing to the now familiar mid-day lull, but I still believe having that time is important for artists, vendors and the volunteers that run that space in a ten-hour con day.

Talent Show: Love the idea and how long its time slot was since it provided entertainment during the mid-day lull, just got a bit loud at times due to the layout of the venue and crowding. That band was sick though!

Panels for Day One: I caught the tail end of Dr. Miku's SCP Auction which was so creative and fun. Thank you for the bracelet! I also attended the Fanfiction Panel where I learned quite a lot related to community building, the policies of particular platforms (where an employee of a fanfic platform was revealed in the audience, gasp!) and the how to apply the concept of gift communities to fandom spaces. I did not have a chance to speak to the panelists of the Fanfiction Panel but if they ever see this blog... Please do another panel!ʕ ˃ᴥ˂ ʔ You both were such great presenters and I'd love to hear you speak on this topic further.

BALL PIT!: Yes! I did get a Ball Pit photo because that is a DashCon staple. No, the volunteers here were not wearing the iconic "Ball Pit Lifeguard" shirts from last year which was fine by me. YES, I found a yellow slip of paper on it that said "PZSS" and posed with it. No, no one actually pissed in the ball pit because who wants to deal with a potential up to $1000CAD fine for messing up the ball pit?!

The tumblr sexyman Meet Up: Originally not on the schedule but, added in was the iconic tumblr sexyman meet up. It took a minute for everyone to get organized but once we did we made sure have the most silly ideas to come to life! I loved seeing all the sexyman cosplayers come together and have a hilarious time being directed by an Eliza cosplayer through a variety of photo poses. The tumblr sexyman meet up remains a DashCon 2 highlight for me! (Feel free to send me any meet up photos you took at this meet up because I did not take any on my phone!)

The Charity Raffle Results & Guillotine: The psuedo final event of the night (as there were still panels for the evening, along with sea shanty singing in the main hall) was delayed in starting due to panels with special guests still going and some other difficulties. I did not mind this at all because the process of announcing the charity raffle winners and the results of the vote for who would be the guillotine victim were revealed rather quickly. I always appreciate charity raffles or auctions at community-run conventions, because these fundraisers demonstrate how sub-culture groups such as fandoms can rally together to help further improve the communities they are present in offline. As for the results of the Guillotine Vote... Red & Blue of OverlySarcastic Productions provided some important backstory for the DashCon 2 Universe (two-niverse?) and Robespierre was executed in a beautiful demonstration of theatre magic! ...Only for the corpse of Robespierre in a white blanket to run off stage (like a ghost?) and the new emperor of DashCon(?) Napoleon Born2Parte appeared with a stick horse. Did I begin to think this entire vote was a staged skit after this reveal? ʕ≖ᴥ≖ʔ ...Yes, but DashCon 2 is now becoming known for having fun and eccentric lore, so I left Day One filled with satisfaction and excitement for Day Two!

Day Two: The SuperWhoLock Wedding Day - Sunday August 2nd, 2026

The main event for Sunday as advertised was the SuperWhoLock wedding as a follow-up to the fact that there was not one-but three proposals that took place at DashCon 2 (2025) last year. I was interested to see if this was going to be a legit wedding since, I could see tumblrinas taking the chance to have an officiated ceremony at DashCon 2. With a set time on the schedule I was not going to miss it! ʕ≧ᴥ≦ʔ

Note: I would revisit the Vendor's Hall and Crow Exchange today as well, but I will not re-examine those spaces since I discussed them in-depth in the Day One section.

Panels for Day Two: I would attend two different panels on Day Two (haha)! The first panel compared the first arc of Warrior Cats to the graphic novel trio adaptation that was recently released and honestly this was another absolute banger of a panel! If the panelist ever reads this, you are based, please keep doing panels on Warrior Cats, and if DashClan happens Jaycall of WindClan will complete the trial to defect to DashClan! ฅ(ᵔ꒳ ᵔマ.ᐟ Post SuperWhoLock Wedding and Closing Ceremonies I attended a panel by Hana Hyperfixates which was the perfect balance of guided exploration, audience discussion, and was the best way to conclude my final day at DashCon 2! Reflecting on all the panels I attended throughout DashCon 2 I would easily say panels were another highlight for me due to the fact there was such a wide variety of topics explored and the panelists all were so passionate about what they were sharing!

The Chill Room: For the first time ever I accessed the DashCon 2 Chill Room which was located in what I can only describe as a room hidden behind a pocket door wall (super cool and mysterious), and the label was accurate. The space had to be one of the chillest chill rooms I have accessed at any event I've attended. With a variety of seating options, tables, charging areas for devices, lots of space to lie down (if needed) and windows that let you watch the rain fall on Day Two, this was the perfect spot to decompress and get a moment of quiet in. I would've sat here for a bit longer if I could, but with a packed schedule, after eating my lunch quietly and taking a few deep breaths I had get back into the fray!

GUILLOTINE!: I got a photo in the guillotine and it was rad! I loved the touch of pink blood (what in the DanganRonpa reference?!) and how the photos turned out. Thank you to the volunteer who took my picture here!

The SuperWhoLock Wedding & Closing Ceremonies: Before jumping into discussing this, I need to mention that this event started almost thirty (30) minutes late ʕ╥ᴥ╥ʔ which I found to be very surprising. Yes, many of us waiting in the audience took this time to catch up on our socials, discuss the day's events, engage in item trading and eat while watching the SuperWhoLock Wedding participants review scripts. In true DashCon fashion though, once the event got started the delay was quickly made up for by how rapidly things were completed. The Wedding itself turned out to be a time-loop, haunted ball pit fan fiction skit written by none other than Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way. Audience members sang along to I Write Sins Not Tragedies to open the show and we all cheered as Sir Strange ÆONS and Emperor(?) Napoleon Born2Parte officiated(?) the ceremony. We got a hilarious new name for this year's iteration of DashCon as well... "DashCon 2: The Third One". As for the closing ceremonies, they were incredibly short. A "that's the end of DashCon 2" followed by "we're doing the Wedding Reception Dance Party now" and instructions for setting up the space so attendees could participate. ʕ•͡•ʔ As an audience member, I felt like a thanks to everyone for coming to DashCon 2 along with thanking all of your special guests for being here should've been mentioned since this was the official closing to the convention, but I can understand if you were ready to enter the final activities for Day Two.

Final Thoughts on DashCon 2: Vive la Révolution! (August 1st & 2nd, 2026)

aka. DashCon 2: The Third One

Not to restate what I had mentioned earlier in this blog entry but when looking back on DashCon 2: Revolution and DashCon 2 (2025), I will continue to go to bat for this convention! Vendors and attendees alike were frequently discussing how this event stands out from other conventions because of the tiny but mighty fanbases in attendance and general positive vibes that carried into every corner of the venue. The attendees of this convention have a special fandom sweet-spot where everyone here is looking for fellow fans of their interests and places to truly be their geeky/nerdy/gregory/tumblrina-y selves without any judgement. As I mentioned to some tumblr sexymen cosplayers during the meet up, I feel that DashCon 2 recreates the nostalgia of the convention culture I grew up in perfectly and by some miracle the organizers of DashCon 2 captured this "lightning in a bottle" not once, but twice. I have to applaud the brilliance of this team to maintain this energy! Every time I have left DashCon 2, I have felt refreshed and filled with joy even when it was the very last day. While I once again did not attend VirtualDash this year, speaking to attendees who had logged in it seems that the vibes were just as passionate online as they were at the in-person event.

As noted earlier though, I do have some areas of growth for the in-person DashCon 2:

Line Signage: I'm sorry, but you need some signs for where your lines for panels or activities start and end. Whether that's having volunteers stand with a sign that indicates the back or front of a line or putting a sign on the wall to show where your lines are flowing to with a clear front of line or back of line, this needs to get resolved. Please don't write line information on the tape you've put on the floor, no one is looking there. Having signage would also help your volunteers know where your line-ups are when asked instead of misdirecting attendees.

Schedule Changes and Delays: Life happens, especially in the hustle and bustle of a convention. I appreciate notifying attendees of changes through presenting them with a physical schedule that has a list of changes, or through pasting up posters all around the venue, but why not have a poster sized central schedule with all the changes at the information booth? The information booth is where this important information should be relayed, and no matter how last minute a change is the job of an information booth is to ensure attendees are notified of these changes. Also, it is okay to just cancel activities/events/panels instead of trying to reschedule them. If a time slot isn't going to work, just cancel it and apologize for the schedule change. Lastly, I always appreciate when a convention staffer pops on stage to let attendees know why an event is running late, the fact this was not done at any point during the nearly 30 minute delayed SuperWhoLock Wedding and Closing Ceremonies I found to be unusual.

Archiving the tumblr sexyman shrine?: Please feel free to correct me through commenting in my Visitor Log, but, is there an official archive of the tumblr sexyman shrine contributions hosted by DashCon 2? If not, why not take a similar approach to other fan-generated shrines and have a volunteer or team of volunteers whose job at the end of the convention is to scan and upload all the shrine contributions to a shared folder or in a special section on your website? Again, if this already exists please correct me and if this doesn't exist... DashCon 2 Team if you find and read this blog, hit me up! I'd be absolutely thrilled to find a way to do this with y'all as a volunteer because I'm INVESTED in the archiving of things.

The Venue??: I will admit, a lot of local attendees presented perspectives that helped me to re-evaluate my earlier thoughts on potentially switching the venue for DashCon 2. Likewise, most of the issues I had noted earlier in this blog regarding the layout of the venue when organizing the event were gracefully resolved with DashCon 2: Revolution.

Part of the reason why this convention works so well is the fact that it is at a smaller venue that loans itself into essentially capping the attendance. Local attendees also mentioned that the magic of DashCon 2 could be lost if it moves into the venues that larger fandom conventions have been established and running in for years. Upon receiving these perspectives and insights, my position on the venue has shifted. I want the magic of DashCon 2 to remain! As more eyes shift onto DashCon 2 with people interested in attending though, I think the dilemma will quickly shift into how fast passes will sell out... Lastly, the problem of how to get some of the attendees to respect the signage of the venue stating that certain spaces are not for DashCon 2 but the general public who wish to continue with regularly scheduled lessons and celebrations is another challenge to solve.

I also have an idea for keeping the interest in DashCon 2 in the lead up to the event taking place, and carrying onto other platforms (not just tumblr and discord). In discussion with fellow DashCon 2 attendees and vendors, some of us are not on tumblr anymore, had never joined tumblr and/or are not on the DashCon 2 Discord. Due to this, the conversations around DashCon 2 in other online spaces, from what I have observed and heard, are quite limited:

Art Contests: I am stealing this idea from my "home convention" as it was an activity that became a corner-stone of the event for years. Since DashCon 2 has the Cirque du Dash it only seems fair that they share the spotlight of the conventions antics outside of being on the website, the tumblr and physical print material, and establish a stronger connection to the yearly theme (which have so far been absolutely immaculate). Why not host a visual art contest of the Cirque doing/matching the yearly theme in some way and the winner of this contest possibly gets a pass to the in-person or virtual con along with their art being used for something connected to the convention (like the art on one of the in-person convention badges, or as a charity art print for the charity raffle)? Why not let the artistic fans of DashCon 2 do what they do best and ART!

In a similar train of thought, why not do a fanfiction contest? Look, we all know tumblr and AO3 go hand in beautiful hand (heck, I think the platforms are still being shipped together to this day)… Why not do a fanfic contest with your Cirque du Dash crew connected to the yearly theme as well with the same prize possibility as the visual art contest (win a pass to the in-person or virtual con)? Building on this idea, the winner could also have the honour of reading their fanfiction (if they want to) live during the opening or closing ceremonies which I think would be just as wondrous as the fanfiction-esque SuperWhoLock Wedding skit done before the closing ceremonies this year.

Before anyone jumps to comment in my Visitor Log, yes, I know these contest ideas may be insane to organize since they would be across multiple platforms and yes, I’d be happy to take on the challenge as someone who has organized virtual events for years. I also acknowledge that activities like these may already exist on tumblr of the DashCon 2 server (or both), and if so am a-okay for these ideas to be completely disregarded.

As I write this blog entry, it has now been a week since the pre-convention jitters of DashCon 2: Revolution and we've already received a news article recapping the event3! I will continue to lurk across YouTube sharing the videos about DashCon 2 (2026) that catch my eye and waxing nostalgic about the convention for the rest of the year while possibly making another zine for my friend about my rascality! I will keep my eyes peeled on my inbox for more news from the DashCon 2 Team including the answer to the question that is on everyone’s mind… Since the team has mentioned wanting to make this a yearly affair, what will DashCon 2x2 = 4 look like in 2027? Once again, I am excited to see where this event goes as the momentum behind it continues upward, and would be overjoyed if I could attend for a third year in a row! ʕ⊃•ᴥ•⊂ʔ

  1. I will not deep dive into the medical emergency that happened once The Royal Ball (aka. Dance Party) started since the DashCon 2 Team were extremely prepared in case any emergency happened by having a medical team on site the entire convention which ensured this was resolved quickly and efficiently. The individual has come out to say that they are okay though, their original post cannot be accessed through the WayBack Machine and is inaccessible without a tumblr account.
